Deux – Decadence LP (2010)

without comments

Vive La Synth Baguette!!!

The life of an anachronist is no picnic: One’s soul (do robots have souls?) is spread across time like brie on pain chaud. Fortunately for those of us stuck surfing time-space, there is music this good to keep us afloat. Minimal Wave nails it again with another anthology repress, this time by French duo, Deux. Might as well double-up on the vinyl while you’re there buying Futurisk Player Piano LP to save on shipping. If you’re feeling flush, I would pick up the Medio Mutante EP, Inestable single, too.

SCHEMATIC: Not convinced?! Check out the full Deux posting HERE!!!

Robot Rock du Jour: Cerrone – Supernature (1977)

with 2 comments

This decidedly bizarre pre-Spike Jonze/Michel Gondry video features mutants, naked chicks à la Rio, a vintage Rolls-Royce and a kick-ass rainbow-coloured acrylic drum set.

Supernature is a cautionary post-apocalyptic tale of scientific hubris and genetic experimentation gone awry. Although there are numerous tracks from the 70s and 80s that pay homage to space, robots and computers (thank God), few disco/synth tracks really drop earth science. Me like! Me like!

SCHEMATIC: High quality extended vinyl rip MP3, lyrics, cover art…

Robot Rock du Jour: Taxi Girl – Paris (1984)

without comments

Pain chaud! I’m not sure what the hell is going on in this video…but I like it. It’s a damned time capsule from 1984 Paris wrapped in a warm baguette synth line.

Paris features a very young Mirwais (!!) and Daniel Darc walking around town and ragging on their home city.

SCHEMATIC: Videos for Mannequin, Cherchez le Garçon, an early band portrait and Paris album cover art…

Robot Rock du Jour: The Droids – (Do You Feel) The Force (1977)

without comments

Silver droids + wall of speakers + dancing space chick = hot video. Leave it to a Frenchman (Barclay manager Fabrice Cuitad) to put out a super-cool concept 7″, 12″ and LP based on the iconic film Star Wars. This video covers Part I. Part II has a funkier vibe.

SCHEMATIC: HQ vinyl rips of Part I and Part II, sources, cover art…

Robot Rock du Jour: Daft Punk – Live in Wisconsin (1996)

without comments

For the truly hardcore: Before Alive 2007, or even Alive 1997, there was Thomas Bangalter rockin’ live acid tech, supposedly at Even Further in Wisconsin on May 26, 1996. This is 30 largely unknown minutes of musical genius. All the hallmarks of Daft Punk’s signature composition and sound are there, just 11 years before most people ever even heard of them.

SCHEMATIC: The complete Interstella 5555 and a fantastic Daft Punk interview from Japan… Read the rest of this entry »

Robot Rock du Jour: Space – Magic Fly (1977)

with one comment

This video is totally out of control! Pictutre this: Robots rocking out on analog synths and live drums while a hot female humanoid dances seductively for your tripped out 1970s pleasure. French band Space clearly had it going on in 1977.

The audio player below comes pre-loaded with the  12″ b-side track, Fasten Seat Belt, which was ripped at 24/96 from my personal copy and converted to MP3 at 192kbps. Although Fasten Seat Belt is a funkier journey into the cosmos, it still totally rocks!

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

SCHEMATIC: High quality vinyl rips from their second LP, Just Blue

Robot Rock du Jour: Deux – Paris / Orly (1985)

with 4 comments

Hot Girls Singing Over Synths (HGSOS).

This French duo were really onto something with their minimal synths, stripped-down rhythm compositions and suitably cold female lyrics. This prime example of French minimal synth pop was no doubt influenced by their proximity to Germany as the cool synth-laden air traveled down from Les Alpes. Presented here is Paris / Orly the b-side from their Europe 7″ published in 1985 on André Records.
